Five things I do for fun..

“We’re so busy watching out for what’s just ahead of us that we don’t take time to enjoy where we are.”

Bill Watterson

Today’s topic is quite a current topic in our household.. As two full time working people, with two kids under 10, it is a busy time in our lives.

One that is both taxing and very routine. Monday to Friday, wake up, get kids ready, drive them to pre and after school club, work until around five, pick kids up, do homework until seven to half seven, may be a movie with kids if there is time or a board game, bed time for kids, bed time for us and repeat.

Saturdays are spent driving kids to swimming, sports, chess club. When it is good enough day may be slot in a walk. Sundays are for cleaning washing clothes and may be some time to do what we would like.. but generally all we want is to relax.

We are both tired mentally and physically…

Yesterday, my eldest son (10 yo) came home quite upset. His friend’s dad passed away last week. My son is quite a deep thinker and was overthinking things. This among other things, that happened recently that I won’t go into, really shows us just how short life can be..

From now on as a family we chose to live the life to the fullest and have fun as much as possible. Instead of physical things from this year we will be having experiences and traveling as much as possible.

This brings us to today’s topic. What’s are the things that I do for fun.

Number 1

Traveling abroad. As a family we love planning for, looking forward to and going to new places. The things I remember most about my childhood are the trips we took, especially those abroad. It expands my kids cultural awareness and we truly relax when there are no obligations. My kids have been traveling from about six weeks old and we try to go at least on one trip abroad a year. Even during Covid when we could not travel abroad we explored new places in Ireland. I have something planned for this weekend, but cannot say yet as it is a surprise, so watch out for future post!

Number 2

Going on hikes and exploring new trails in Ireland. When we have good enough weather and some time on Saturday or when the week is just getting too vexing on our minds, we go for treks. Ireland is a beautiful country and about two years ago I discovered an app called AllTrails with contains a number of trails all over Ireland with people leaving photos and reviews. So far we have explored most trails around our hometown within 1 hour drive distance.

Number 3

Going out to entertainment parks with family. We have a yearly subscription to Emerald park (formerly known as Tayto park) and we love going there to have fun.

Number 4

Another way that I personally have fun is through creation. I have my own shop for digital creations (https://www.shopinireland.ie/sellers/creationsbytcs) and I love making my own items. I love to sew, customizing clothes, making hair accessories, making mugs, crocheting, knitting, etc. Check out my TikTok (@creationsbytcs) and Instagram (@creationsbytcs) for what other creations I made. I tried selling my own items but it didn’t work out and I decided just to make what I want when I want as gifts.

Number 5

Last but not least, I love playing instruments. I play violin and piano. They are my calm and emotion release. If I am stressed, 20 minutes on piano and I am much calmer. Learning new pieces is both challenge and fun.

  1. Ireland is definitely one of our top 5 places we want to visit with our daughters. Did you travel by plane with your kids when they were still babies or toddlers? I’ll take all your tips 😊

    • At six weeks we travelled in a car as there was a lot to bring.. I think kids were around 3-4 months when they were on a plane. For that, learnings were depending on the age to entertain and distract, for babies bottle to drink during lift off and landing (prevents their little ears being sore), change nappy just before the flight. Harness for carrying baby around (read reviews for best harness for travel and extensive use as a good one can last you years and can grow with kids), one godsend was Doona car seat, it’s buggy and seat in one so handy for taxis and waking around. Nappies if you are going abroad I found not being as readily available, medicine just in case, if feeding with formula extra just in case. There are many more other tips. I will write a blog on learnings I think to share the knowledge

      • This is wonderful. Definitely taking a few notes. Looking forward to that blog post. Traveling with them is a bit intimidating and we need all the help we can get.
