Riverside restaurant Belfast dining experience

We were quite apprehensive after reading reviews online about this restaurant. Reviews ranged from bad to excellent and we weren’t sure we wanted to go and not like the dinner.

The night before we had dinner in No.4 bar, and even though it was amazing atmosphere with live music and amazing surroundings, the service and food were not.

In No.4 bar the food was definitely reheated and not freshly prepped , but still took an hour to come out. The drinks were long coming too. For kids, after starters one of the waiters brought their ice cream desserts, expecting us to take them. The main was nowhere in sight. so we had to point that out and ask for them to be sent after mains.

Here is a photo of menu:

Menu from No. 4 bar.

I ordered chicken wings, these were definitely not crispy, there was no celery nor blue cheese dip and they were so hot that I started to sweat after one bite. my husbands burger definitely was reheated.

So this brings us to second night – Riverside restaurant.

We were seated quite fast and the restaurant was quite empty. We placed an order also very fast as we already decided in what we wanted before going downstairs to restaurant.

We ordered food and drinks and waited… 30 minutes passed and kids were getting restless with no food nor drink in sight. I finally managed to call a waitress over and asked her for water for table. We were brought a jug of water which she used to fill glasses and took away from us.

More waiting, finally starters arrived. The waitress apologized saying they were very busy. The restaurant had three couples.

The states were very nice. We had squid with wasabi mayo and kids garlic bread.

Then finally one of our drinks arrived, only it was not what we ordered. The staff were not native English speakers and didn’t know their own drinks, so had to ask management about what drinks we were ordering. We ordered IPA and cider that were on tap. After that the food arrived quite promptly for mains and then dessert for kids.

My husband ordered another IPA in between the starter and main and that didn’t arrive so I had to ask about it after he finished his main. Finally it arrived. The staff were very apologetic and really lovely with kids. However I did feel like they weren’t sure about what went on there nor had a lot of experience.

The food itself was amazing and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

The bill arrived and we had an order of chips on it that we didn’t place and the wrong drink that was mistakenly brought to us and none of our husbands beer. So we sent it back as didn’t want to pay for what we didn’t have and wanted to make sure to pay for what we did have.

In the end all was sorted and we headed to our room, content with the food and knowing that we most likely won’t be coming back.

  1. Why open a restaurant if you’re just going to reheat food? That’s so ridiculous. And why take an hour? Was the microwave somewhere across town? I hate it when we spend money going out to eat and end up disappointed with the restaurant. At least the food was good so it wasn’t a total waste of your time.
