In the Socratic dialogue ‘Republic’, Plato famously wrote: “our need will be the real creator” (Wikipedia.org, 2020) which was moulded over time into the English proverb ‘Necessity is the mother of invention’.
If you asked my kids what is the most important invention of my lifetime, their answers are: Us (kids), mobile phone, electricity 😂 (how old do they think I am), mobile phone and coffee machine.
I would say internet. It opened up so many doors for acquiring knowledge and knowing what is happening around the world.
It provided us a way of learning and I truly believe made us 100 times more knowledgeable than we would have been without it.
Now, everyone has it on their finger tips with mobile phones and Google and virtual assistants. My kids, if they want to find out something, will go and ask ‘hey Google’ …
